Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt is released on bail

MUMBAI August 24, 2007: Sanjay Dutt was released just after 7 am from the Yerawada prison in Pune to avoid crowds of fans that had gathered since Monday when the Supreme Court ordered his temporary release. Sanjay Dutt walked out of jail yesterday striped white shirt and black jeans, sporting a beard and a new crew cut, walked out from the main gate. A team of policemen, led by Yerawada police inspector Prasad Hasabnis, prevented mediapersons from talking to Dutt outside the jail. The vehicle, carrying Dutt to the Lohegaon Airport, was chased by mediapersons till the airport entrance, where the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stopped them.

Amitabh Bachchan’s reaction was crisp but summed up the film fraternity’s sentiment. “We are very relieved and happy for him,” the superstar told HT. Ameesha Patel, Dutt’s co-star in Tathastu, echoed the view: “I’m very happy and hope he doesn’t have to suffer anymore.”

Dutt flew to Mumbai on a chartered flight and arrived home to a group of family and friends who blessed his return by breaking a coconut on his doorstep. He will have to surrender in less than a week’s time before the special TADA court in Mumbai. The court has fixed August 27 as the date for him to be given the judgment copy.
