Bajaj Auto shifting production from Akurdi to Waluj from September

Bajaj Auto Ltd., the leading manufacturer of renowned brand Pulser and Bajaj Scooter,  has planned to stop the production of its Crystal scooterette of two-wheelers at its Akurdi plant near Pune with effect from September 1, and has issued a notice to workers that the six-day workweek has been cut to four days with immediate effect.

This is being attributed to rationalisation of production at its three plants, Waluj, Chakan and Pantnagar. Although company officials were not available for comment, it is believed that this is the beginning of the company’s attempts to shut down the plant. “We have decided to shift

Crystal production to Waluj from September 1,” confirmed VP corporate CP Tripathi. Over a period of time BAL has been taking efforts to cut down jobs in the Akurdi plant through voluntary retirement schemes. The intention to close down the Akurdi plant as a manufacturing location was first indicated by Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj, at the company’s annual general meeting in July.

Presently, Bajaj motorcycles are manufactured at Valuj near

Aurangabad, Chakan near Pune and Pant Nagar in Uttarakhand, while Crystal - the only scooter under its belt now - is made at Akurdi. The company’s three wheeler production is concentrated at Waluj with some volumes coming from Pant Nagar as well. The Bharatiya Kamgar Sena, the labour union arm of the Shiv Sena, has already taken a position to oppose the management. Being the oldest plant of its existing four plants, it also had the oldest workmen, who are affiliated to the Bharatiya Kamgar Sena.
