MTNL launches Internet telephony; introduces Re 1 ISD call

NEW DELHI: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), which operates in Delhi and Mumbai circles, on Friday launched Internet telephony by which customers using this service will be able to make ISD calls using a fixed line telephone without a PC. Broadband customers in Delhi and Mumbai will be able to make an ISD call to any part of the world for as low as Re 1 per minute through their fixed line phones. The best part of the offer is that one does not need to have computer at home for internet telephony.

By doing this, MTNL will become the first telecom company in the country to offer internet telephony or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) where subscribers can enjoy ultra cheap ISD calls without even having a computer at home. MTNL has tied up with Aksh Optifibre to offer Netfone, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. Aksh would manage all the back-end work for the VoIP service which would include billing, connectivity to international gateways and installing switches among others.

VoIP’s induction to MTNL’s list of services is the result of the relentless efforts to provide consumers the benefits of technology at the most affordable prices : A Senior Official of MTNL Said.\ Sources said, BSNL may also launch internet telephony through fixed line instruments in all major cities, though no time frame was given.
