Asha Bhosle

Asha Bhosle is an Indian singer. She is best known as a Bollywood playback singer, although she has a much wider repertoire. Her career started in 1943 and has spanned over six decades. She is the sister of the equally accomplished Lata Mangeshkar. Bhosle is considered one of the most versatile South Asian singers — her range of songs includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian Classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, Rabindra Sangeets and Nazrul Geetis. She was undoubtedly at her best during the mid 80’s and it was then that Asha rendered ‘Mera kuch saaman tumhaare paas pada hai’, the R.D. Burman composition for Gulzar’s Ijaazat that won her the National Award as Best Singer.

Asha Bhosle has sung for a wide range of actresses — from Madhubala to Mallika Sherawat. Her songs include evergreen classics and popular chartbusters through the years. R D Burman’s famous Sholay song, Mehbooba, was remixed for Himesh Reshammiya’s acting debut, Aap Kaa Surroor. Sung by Himesh and Asha, the song was picturised on the singer-actor and Mallika Sherawat.
