Nathuram Godse

Nathuram Vinayak Godse (May 19, 1910 – November 15, 1949), born at Baramati, Pune District, India was the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. His father, Vinayak Vamanrao Godse, was a post office employee and his mother was Lakshmi (nee Godavari). Godse dropped out of high school and became an activist with the Hindu Mahasabha. He was an RSS activist who left the organization in 1932. Godse assassinated Gandhi on January 30, 1948, approaching him during the evening prayer, bowing, and shooting him three times at close range with a Beretta semi-automatic pistol. They blamed Gandhi for the Partition of India, which left hundreds of thousands of people dead in the wake of religious unrest. Godse was hanged at Ambala Jail on November 15, 1949, along with Narayan Apte, the other conspirator.
