Starting his career with the Indian Foreign Service in 1972 after having done his masters in history from Delhi University the Congress core committee is expected to meet Friday evening to decide names of new governors to Raj Bhavans in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Maharashtra and Punjab governors have also completed their terms and could be replaced. The 1972-batch Indian Foreign Service officer had earlier served in China, Israel, Austria, Japan and Sri Lanka and was an advisor in the Department of Atomic Energy during the course of his diplomatic career.
The UPA leadership has also decided to reward some of its senior leaders, mostly from the Congress, such as former home minister Shivraj Patil, whose Rajya Sabha term is about to end, and former Union minister Santosh Mohan Deb, who lost the Lok Sabha election, with gubernatorial positions. Shivshankar Menon has been a dynamic officer of the Indian Foreign Services who has since risen to the very top of his professional ladder.
